Situated in a historically industrial and commercial pocket of Fitzroy undergoing significant regeneration, Cambridge Street is a study in considered proportion and design restraint.
At 9 storeys high, 88 Cambridge occupies a wide street frontage. The site presented a challenge in deftly managing massing to break up what could present as significant visual bulk. The design visually breaks the building into two mirrored but unique forms, their masonry facade elements drawing the eye upwards lending a well-balanced verticality to the broad floor plan.
The rhythmic, classically proportioned facade language references the more formal streetscapes of cities such as New York and London, which retain strong geometric proportions and conscious repetition. The simple material pallet strengthens the concept through the use of contrasting tones of masonry, highlighting the two towers on a recessive muted base.
