Located within the ever-evolving Southbank precinct, an area highlighted by a period of significant renewal, 54 Clarke St is nestled amongst a number of recent multi-storey developments. The site is uniquely visible from the West Gate Freeway to the South, placing particular importance to how both Melbourne locals and visitors experience the proposed building from the elevated arterial, in addition to at a pedestrian scale.
With such a conspicuous site set amongst a visually competitive context, the design was an opportunity to present a fresh approach to Melbourne’s high-rise architecture. The facade treatment is a contemporary take on the historically significant gothic style architecture, seen throughout Melbourne’s CBD. Sculptural, sweeping arches are carefully considered to balance proportion and scale, tapering to simultaneously elongate the 25-storey tower whilst grounding the active street frontage at a pedestrian level.
